Degree Girl "Muriel"
My name is Muriel Morton. I am the youngest of 3 daughters. I was the first to graduate from college in 1983. I am a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. I attended Western Carolina University with a degree in Marketing and a minor in Fashion Merchandising. I am from Atlanta, Georgia. There were many challenges in college because it was a predominantly white school. I had barriers I had to overcome such as being either the only black or the only female in my business classes. I always remember what my dad taught me. He told me even though it may be hard, learn what you can learn. What I learn no one can take away. I have always remembered that advice.
I spent 10 years in Corporate and realized there was no future for me. I have spent the last 24 years in Education. I originally did not want to teach. I was a secretary, computer specialist and graduation coach. I was placed in special education as a paraprofessional in 2008 and have not looked back. I finally found my passion by helping the students with special needs. I completed my Masters in 2011 from Grand Canyon University and just completed my Specialist in 2018 from University of West Georgia.
My advice to anyone attending college is to never give up. Know that there were people who fought for you to be where you are. Appreciate the blessings and make the adventure worth it.
