Degree Girl "Leslie"
"No one rises to low expectations" by motivational speaker Les Brown has been my life quote since the 1990's and a quote I use with my students
My name is Leslie Perkins and I'm a proud student affairs administrator for over 20 years and currently I'm serving as the Assistant Dean of Student Life at Sweet Briar College in my native Virginia.
Little did I know that God was leading me to a career path in working with college students when I attended Radford University(VA) and discovered through my student leadership opportunities and mentors that this is what I was being led to. Radford University will always hold a special place in my heart as this is where I attained both a BA degree in journalism/public relations concentration and an M.S. in counselor education with a concentration in college student personnel. It will also hold a special place in my heart as I became a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated there as well in Spring 1991. I'm currently active in the Tau Delta Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. As one of our founding principles-- I take scholarship seriously and continuously pursue scholarship throughout my personal and professional life.
I was the first in my family to go to college and the journey with both of my degrees was not easy, but it was continual prayer, the true mentorship from faculty and staff that I am still in touch with, and the lifetime friendships that literally got me through. Those struggles and experiences from my own educational experiences are value added in my assisting students I work with, which is also why I relate closely with the quote "No one rises to low expectations." I expect and demand the best from my students and for myself and I applaud the Degree Girl brand.
