Degre Girl "Lashawn"

My name is La’Shawn Rene Wright, I was born to the parents of Faith Williams and Vernon Harris (deceased) in Richmond, Virginia. I am the youngest of three, Joyce Valentine (sister) and Lloyd Williams III (brother). I am married to Charles R Wright, Jr and we have three sons. Kesean Wright, 20; Joseph Smith, Jr, 18; and Tyler Williams, 16.

I started my career in the medical field in 1992, as a receptionist in Dr.’s Latham and Latham’s office. I entered Virginia Commonwealth University in 1993 after high school with a major in biology/ Premed. In 1995, I went to school and became a certified nursing assistant. In 1997, after my first born, I decided to go back to school for medical assistant. In 1999, I went back to school for phlebotomist. With two children and being a single parent I realized thatI had to give my children a better life. In 2002, I returned to school at J Sergeant Reynolds Community College. I obtained my Associates in Nursing in 2005, as well as being inducted to Phi Theta Kappa Honor. After graduation, I was offered a position at Richmond Community Hospital, within a year, I was a charge nurse of the Medical-Surgery/ Telemetry unit. I had my doubts because I was a new nurse however I was only being prepped for my future.

In 2009, I returned to University Of Phoenix (UOP) for my Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree with the path to bridge into the Nurse Practitioner program. While working on my degree I supervised one of the prestigious nursing communities in Richmond, Lakewood Manor, from May 2011- October 2012. While in this position, I identified the lack of continuous education needed for the nurses to keep up with the acute patients that are now being discharged from the hospital. A new position was created for a Nurse Educator.

In 2011, I returned to UOP for my Masters of Science in Nursing degree. However, they no longer had the NP track. I received my MSN in 2013 while working as a nurse manager at Envoy of Westover Hills, from November 2012-May 2014. In this position, I assisted with the implementation of the Congestive Heart Failure program for our patients. It was during this time that the Regional Director of Nursing asked me to assist other facilities within the company. I traveled to the Tidewater area from November 2013- February 2014, which I helped with consultations, auditing, surveys, and interim Assistant Director of Nursing at Envoy Thornton Hall. In May 2014, I was promoted to Assistant Director of Nursing at Envoy Stratford Hills, skilled nursing facility in Richmond.

Because of my determination to complete my degree I had the support of my family, husband, and children. In 2014, I was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society for nurses.

In Spring 2013, I was inducted into Zeta Chapter of Chi Eta Phi Nursing Sorority Inc. Within my first few months with the sorority I was named chairman of the Hospitality committee in 2013. As the chair, I was able to assist Zeta’s events by providing the caterer. In Spring 2014, I was elected as the Corresponding Secretary, in this position I am able to keep all members of Zeta chapter aware of what is going on in the chapter and sorority as a whole. As a member of Zeta, I have been the big sister to two of our neophytes. I have participated in Chi’s yearly North East Region (NER) conference in 2013 and 2015. I also attended the NER leadership conference in 2013, in Washington DC. 2016. I joined Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc Epsilon Upsilon chapter in Lawrenceville Virginiia In June 2016. .Shortly after, I became a nursing professor at Fortis College Norfolk Va.

As I envision my professional future, I plan to attend school in 2017 in pursue of my advance nursing degree as a Nurse Practitioner in Geriatrics. With my degree I plan to give back to the community to serve the indigent and educate to promote a healthier living.
